Beginning in the mid-to-late 2000s, coherent receivers combined with high-speed digital signal processing became practical. Coherent detection recovers the full optical field (amplitude and phase) and enables high-order modulation formats such as QPSK and 16-QAM. DSP algorithms compensate for chromatic dispersion, polarization-mode dispersion, and other impairments that previously limited performance. The result was a dramatic increase in spectral efficiency and reach.

Capacity Scaling: 100G to 1.6T and Beyond

Commercial 100 Gbit/s coherent wavelengths became widespread in the early 2010s, followed by 200G, 400G, and 800G systems. By the mid-2020s, 1.6 Tbit/s coherent interfaces (for example, the OIF 1600ZR implementation agreement) were being standardized and demonstrated for data-center interconnect and metro applications. Long-haul and submarine systems routinely carry multiple terabits per second on a single fiber pair through dense wavelength-division multiplexing across the C-band and, increasingly, the L-band.

Pluggable coherent optics in form factors such as QSFP-DD and OSFP have brought high-capacity coherent technology from specialized line cards into ordinary switch and router ports, simplifying deployment and reducing cost.

Submarine Cables and Global Connectivity

The global network of submarine fiber-optic cables has expanded dramatically. Modern systems use space-division multiplexing concepts, advanced amplification, and coherent technology to deliver capacities orders of magnitude higher than the first transatlantic fiber cable of 1988. New cables continue to be planned and laid to meet rising intercontinental traffic, much of it driven by cloud and AI workloads.

Free-Space Optical and Space Laser Communications

Free-space optical (FSO) links use lasers through the atmosphere or vacuum rather than fiber. Terrestrial FSO serves as a high-capacity alternative for short-to-medium distances where fiber is difficult to deploy. In space, laser communications offer higher data rates, lower size, weight, and power than traditional radio systems. NASA and other agencies have demonstrated high-rate optical downlinks from low-Earth orbit and are developing deep-space optical links. Inter-satellite laser links are also being deployed in large satellite constellations.

Looking Ahead

Research continues on higher symbol rates, more advanced modulation and coding, multi-band and multi-core fibers, integrated photonic devices, and quantum communications. Visible-light communications (LiFi) and other short-range optical wireless techniques are also under active development. While fundamental physical limits exist, the historical record shows that successive innovations have repeatedly extended the practical capacity of optical systems by many orders of magnitude. As of 2026, optical fiber remains the dominant medium for high-capacity terrestrial and undersea transmission, with free-space optical systems playing growing roles in specialized and space applications.

Modern Era & Current Developments (2000s–Present) Since the early 2000s optical communications has been transformed by coherent detection, advanced digital signal processing, and continuous scaling of capacity to meet the demands of the internet, cloud computing, and artificial intelligence.
